About

Emerentia Gundersen

(Also writing under the name Emma Sturk)

I am a Swedish transgender author of dark fantasy, swashbuckling adventure, horror and historical fiction (and various combinations thereof), writing works of both short story and novel length. The short-form stuff is primarily horror. You can read many of my previous stories right here on this website.

A few of my favorite books (in no particular order):

  • The Damnation Game – Clive Barker
  • The Count of Monte Cristo – Alexandre Dumas
  • Dune – Frank Herbert
  • The Stress of Her Regard – Tim Powers
  • Extreme Makeover: Apocalypse Edition – Dan Wells
  • The King of Attolia – Megan Whalen Turner

Current projects:

  • I am currently querying a historical adventure with supernatural/dark fantasy elements, set in 1692. It’s about pirates. And some other things.
As of 2024, it has had 7 drafts, standing at around 103’000 words. Read more
  • Another ongoing novel set during the Thirty Year War deals with themes of loyalty, identity, and free will, against a backdrop of supernatural intrigue at the heart of Sweden’s imperial project.
It is complete but facing major revisions (currently on it’s 3rd draft). I may choose to rewrite it in Swedish as I increasingly feel it would be appropriate for the project.
  • I am in the middle of writing the first draft of a secondary-world mystery novel about a city watch Inspector searching for the true identity of a thief who seems set on destabilizing the city leadership, and who styles themselves after a near-mythical Robin Hood-type figure. The novel’s backdrop is inspired vaguely by historical sieges such as the siege of Caffa, with a sprinkling of the Paris Commune.
  • Together with another writer, I am in the process of creating an anthology of short stories all set in a speculative universe where leaves are deadly to humans.
